The Gunners moved seven points up at the top of the table with a 3-1 win over Moyes’ West Ham on Boxing Day, picking up where they left off before the World Cup break.
Arteta’s men missed out on a top-four finish last season, faltering in the race when they held the lead over rivals Tottenham, and the scale of their improvement this season has come as a surprise to many, even representing a significant reversal of summer.
However, defending champions Manchester City can close the gap to five points when they play Leeds on Tuesday, and Moyes believes Pep Guardiola’s side are still the team to beat.
“I think Mikel could become one,” said Moyes, when asked if a player who once coached at Everton could become a title-winning manager. “I think they are going to win it this year? I’m not sure.
“I think you would be remiss if you don’t think about Man City. You would be shooting them down. They have a fantastic team and there will be other teams that are a bit more used to being at the top, maybe a Liverpool later on.
“I don’t want to say that Mikel is not building a capable team, but I think he will know that Man City will be the one. They will come here and keep the ball away from Arsenal.
“Arsenal took the ball from us tonight, Man City will come here and keep the ball out of Arsenal and it becomes a different kind of game for them.” .
