Mykhaylo Mudryk to Arsenal: ‘We try to strengthen’ – Mikel Arteta responds to transfer bid for Shakhtar winger

Arsenal have made an initial offer for Mudryk of £35m plus £20m in add-ons after making the 21-year-old their top transfer target in January.

Shakhtar have yet to respond to the offer, but have publicly stated that they want to get closer to £85m and the offer is likely to be rejected.

But Mudryk is interested in a move to the Emirates Stadium and Arsenal hope Shakhtar will soften their stance.

Mudryk posted on Instagram showing himself watching Arsenal beat West Ham 3-1 to move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Arteta refused to accept Arsenal’s offer for Mudryk after that match, but hopes Mudryk has seen against West Ham how Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are thriving.

Asked about the offer for Mudryk, Arteta said: “You know that I never talk about players who are not with us. We said that we will try to find ways to strengthen the team if we find the right players and that’s what I can say.”

On Mudryk watching the West Ham game, Arteta said: “The good thing about England is that you don’t have many other games in other countries, we’re the only ones playing at Christmas! So I hope a lot of people watched our game and we gave them a good show.”

Saka, Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah all scored against West Ham and Arteta was asked if seeing their development under him would attract young players to the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta said: “I hope so. But they have earned the right. It is not something that we have given them, they have earned the right to be part of us and be very, very important in the team and in the squad. I hope we have more.” .
