Switzerland World Cup 2022 guide: Star player, fixtures, squad, one to watch, odds to win


Switzerland finished ahead of Italy to top their World Cup qualifying group, and recent Nations League victories over Spain and Portugal mean they go into the tournament full of confidence.

Unbeaten in the group stage in 2018, when they also drew with Brazil and Serbia, but have lost in the round of 16 in three of the last four World Cups.

Coach: Murat Yakin. Named after Euro 2020, the former Switzerland defender beat Chelsea twice as Basel manager in 2013.

Captain: Xhaka Granite. The Arsenal midfielder faces his fifth major tournament in the form of his life.


Star player: Manuel Akanji. The defender has surprised many with excellent performances from him since he joined Manchester City.

One to watch: Breel Embolo. Eight goals for Monaco this season, the striker needs to lead the line well in Qatar.

The best of them: They usually find a way to reach the knockout stage, losing just two of their last 12 World Cup group stage matches.
